Coming Soon (7/2/09)

by Matt Gamble on Jul.03, 2009, under Coming Soon, Movies, Previews

Lots of additions to the late months of the sheet, hopefully they stay on but with that much lead time who knows at this point. The big addition is the Miyazaki anime film Ponyo.Hopefully he keeps up his seemingly flawless run. And while it is scheduled to open at the Edina, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it actually open at The Uptown. Daniel should also note that his fondest wish has come true, as the new Harry Potter film has been added to the schedule as well. Maybe you should keep your mouth shut next time, Daniel!

Ponyo will be off and running in 800 theaters, so good for Miyazaki, but seeing as though there’s a giant standee for it at Southdale, the snobby lil Uptown wouldn’t have the exclusive. So it goes.

I can’t believe a Miyazaki film will be playing at Southdale. Next they’ll be opening Not Quite Hollywood.

But how the hell can Southdale be playing it if The Edina is scheduled to get it? McClellan must be toying with us yet again.

I know that AMC used to have their little program in which they played more arthouse stuff called “AMC Select”
    http://www.amctheatres.com/amctheatres/user-controller/select

But I don’t think that program exists at Southdale. It was the Eden Prairie AMC only I think. In July they have stuff like Moon and Away We Go and The Cove.

At any rate, looking forward to “The Hurt Locker” next week. Bruno? Not so much.

Southdale has AMC Select, but a Miyazaki film would be incredibly obscure for them to have. And if they do open it, then it won’t play at The Edina.

A curse on both your houses! Or all three of them, as it were.

Actually, this week will hopefully mark my return to a Landmark theater. It’s been a good month since I’ve been to any of the three, which has got to be the longest streak I’ve had in a while. Most of it is busy-ness, some of it is MSPIFF-already-saw-it-ness, and part of it is Wolverine/Star Trek/The Hangover-smugness.

But I haven’t seen Departures or Soraya yet and The Hurt Locker has been top of the list for a while. Bruno…well if I do see it I’m only going to pay $5.

I can also confirm that Southdale does have AMC Select because it’s where I saw Frost/Nixon, I think before it opened at the Edina. Anyway, I’m more concerned about the mainstream coming into Landmark than I am the independent going out to AMC.

And Harry Potter…well that was just an easy call after Bruno and The Hangover. I think the bar would have been set the lowest had it been Transformers or Year One, but hey, there’s still G.I. Joe. You’ve gotta think Cuban has some kid left in him and will slot that one in just in time. He’s obviously regretting not getting any of that Transformers 2 money, and my guess is he will not make the same mistake twice, whether it be G.I. Joe or Fame or High School Musical 8.

Any rumbling about The Headless Woman?

  • Matt Gamble

Nothing has shown up on the booking sheet. I have a couple other places I can check though. If I see anything I’ll be sure to let you know.

Really really want to see this on the big screen. Walker couldn’t get it for Women with Vision because the distribution deal was being worked out at the time (with Strand?!?) Anyway. Just anxious… Thanks!
