High and Low (Brow) – Episode 2

James and I return with yet another thrilling episode of High and Low (Brow). This episode we try out our third format in three episodes (two public and one in secret) as I list off several upcoming Twin Cities film events that will be coming up in the next month, while James gives a DVD spotlight review of Beat the Devil. These new additions to the show are a bit rough, but hopefully the kinks will get ironed out in future shows.
This episode James and I also discuss Gymkata and Survival Quest, the two films that make up our theme of The Most Dangerous Game, a film/book that is about humans being hunted by humans. It makes for an interesting discussion as Survival Quest is a lesser known film by the underrated director Don Coscarelli, known for his Phantasm series, Beastmaster and Bubba Ho-Tep, while Gymkata is widely considered one of the worst movies ever made. Will James turn up his nose at these films as he did with 5 Dolls for an August Moon? Or will we actually find some common ground?
And be sure to stick around to find out what we will be watching for our next episode (which we will record in just two short weeks) as the selections have to be heard to be believed!
One final note, we have discovered that the cause of the high treble from the previous podcast was due to a crappy mic. We weren’t able to get it swapped out for this episode, but we should have a suitable replacement in time for the next one. I’ve messed around with the audio a bit to try and compensate, but please bear with us if it just so happens to cause your ears to bleed.

I am happier with this one than I thought that I’d be. Too bad the microphone is so sketchy; I sound like I’m on an iron lung. I never realized how many words have the letter P in them.
Notes: Olivier was the tooth yanking Nazi in Marathon Man, not Richard Burton. The guy from Goonies/Survival Quest is not one of the kids from Karate Kid. So, that’s two for you and none for me.
I’ll have a new mic for next time.

I’d brag but I managed to insult a a minority group, not once, but twice. I was going to cut it but I think it actually ends up being so stupid its funny. I did run the podcast through an equalizer and compressor, and while it certainly helped, my mic is clearly a piece of junk. Nice to know my $5 mic totally outperforms the $20 one. Huzzah!
I have to admit I think this episode plays much better then I thought it would. I think my opening segment could use some work, but otherwise I think the rest of the format works pretty well. And I am super psyched for the next episode. It really could be a good one, primarily because of the films we are reviewing.

Nice podcast and a solid improvement over the first. Other than fixing that mic issue, I’d suggest making sure you get the theme out near the beginning before jumping into the movies, not at the end as an afterthought.
Also, do you take requests? If so, I have a suggestion with a tenuous Lovecraft connection.

Yeah, I think improving our introduction to each episode would help. Especially since we aren’t reviewing newer films. It will let everyone know what we are doing and when we are doing it. I’m also tossing around the idea of “movie theatre horror stories” or something like that. I don’t think their are all that many people who work at movie theatres podcasting and I’m sure some of the stories I can tell about it would be entertaining for listeners. Or maybe just an ocassional segment on tips to improve your movie going experience.
And I’m planning on working in requests at some point to help up the audience participation of the show. And I’m also considering a Lovecraft themed show at some point. Feel free to email me about your idea Robert.
