Rummaging through the Old Maids
Posted by: Matt Gamble in Features, Movies, Previews, TrailersSo I guess people are kind of excited for this new Steven Spielburg movie coming out this weekend. Who would have guessed that? But for some of us lucky few their is an alternative being shown this weekend, and no, I’m not talking about Uwe Boll’s ridiculous new film Postal. The alternative? OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, a James Bond style spy spoof that lampoons both that illustrious franchise and the movie making style of the 1950’s.
DVD releases are spares as usual this week. It’s saying something that Renny Harlin’s new direct to video film Cleaner is probably in the upper half of the releases, at least in terms of quality. Their are a few other semi-interesting Independent films getting released as well this week, with the critically acclaimed documentary Darfur Now and The Walker the most obvious. But the one that catches my eye is the documentary What Would Jesus Buy? A documentary on the controversial Reverend Billy, and his quest to convince Americans to stop shopping. What better way to honor his teachings then to buy the DVD?
As always trailers are after the break!

Uwe Boll will kick your ass.
Actually I was surfing through the free movie channels and caough 20 minutes of “Alone in the Dark” and thought, “wow, while there’s not much to this and the CGI is terrible, it looks fantastic! The Art Direction and Cinematography are sweet! Why is everybody so hard on Boll?” Quick IMDB search told me that wasn’t his, I then remembered the 20 minutes of “BloodRayne” I saw (could stand) and then declared, “oh yeah, this guy sucks.
Great, now he’s gonna kick my ass too.

I picked up “The Walker” (Criterion) but haven’t watched it yet. I’m also interested in Darfur Now when I’m ready to get depressed. And if I haven’t mentioned it already, I really want to see OSS 117: Cairo. Personal shit has interfered. Maybe Wed night or Thursday.

EDR, I’ll give you twenty bucks if you can sit through “House of the Dead.” In the Name of the King is highly entertaining though. Well worth a look-see. For nothing else than to listen to Burt Reynolds talk about agriculture while on his death bed. - oooh was that a spoiler? Like it matters.

In the Name of the King is terrible. It isn’t even enjoyably bad, just bad. Which pretty much sums up every Boll film.
