Unlike seemingly everyone else I know, I actually like mumblecore movies. I can’t really explain why, but for whatever reason I like the strip down back-to-basics style they are reaching for. And Humpday, the latest mumblecore offering from Lynn Shelton certainly has caught my eye. Oh sure it is sort of an advertisement for Dan Savage’s HUMP! film festival, but I can think of worse things to advertise for, and most of those are on network television. But you have to admit, the idea of two heterosexual men making a porn film with each other in the hopes of going “beyond gay” is so ridiculous that it might actually work. If they, you know, work.

Humpday will open at the Lagoon Cinema on July 31st.

A few additions this week, and a couple of films shuffle around on the schedule. Soul Power gets pushed a few weeks back, while The Merry Gentleman falls off the schedule, probably never to be seen. Hopefully The Parkway swoops in and shows it for a week.

As for additions, Jane Campion’s latest film, Bright Star, finally has a release date, and it will open exclusively at The Uptown, while the back end of the schedule sees several new additions with Other Man, No Impact Man, The Boys are Back and Crude receiving bookings. But, of course, the big addition is A Serious Man, the Coen Brother’s latest film has been booked for an exclusive engagement at The Uptown. But keep an eye on The Walker, as they are in talks to screen the film much earlier then the October release date.

I’m probably not supposed to reveal that little detail but really, like either party is reading this blog.

After a host of new additions last week this week is a little light on new additions. Most of the changes have to do with listing several films as now being tentative dates, as the next couple of weeks are pretty top heavy with new additions, and some are going to have to be pushed.

But their are two new additions, though they are not listed until December. This first is William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe (What a title!) and the second is Broken Embraces, the new Pedro Almodovar film that stars Penelope Cruz’s cleavage and a cast of thousands (or not).

An absolute ton of new additions this week, including Humpday, Spread, The Damned United, New York I Love You, Coco Before Chanel and An Education. But the one I am most excited about, and never thought possible is the inclusion of the animated film 9. I’m incredibly excited to see it, as it is probably my most anticipated film of the year, and it certainly fits my idea of the type of mainstream films I’m more then happy for the Lagoon to show.
