Not much has changed with the films being released over the next couple of weeks, and most of the changes to the list seem to be films shuffling around rather than being dropped completely, which is always a welcome sight. That being said, their are a few big changes and additions.
An Education was bumped a week, but will still be opening at The Uptown, as it looks like they think Coco Before Chanel will have a good run their, of which I am less optimistic about. It looks like a decent enough film, but I think it would do better at The Edina then The Uptown, but I digress.
The other big move is pushing the relase of Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, though that is so it can have an exclusive opening at The Uptown, which is fantastic news. I’ve heard good things about Werner Herzog’s latest, and I hope it lives up to the early praise.
As for new additions, their are a few films that I know next to nothing being added to the booking sheet, which include A Single Man, 44 Inch Chest and A Town Called Panic. Hopefully over the coming months I’ll find out a few more details about them. But the big additions are easily Nine and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Both look like potential Oscar contenders, and Imaginarium is one I am in particular coveting the chance to finally see.

What a cast! What a story! What a horrible trailer! I probably shouldn’t be saying that but this trailer just doesn’t appeal to me on any level. Even Kevin Bacon doesn’t do it for me, and I adore him. Which is impressive since I once watched Kevin Bacon be raped onscreen by Colin Firth and I really liked that.
Though lets be honest, shall we? The primary reason this trailer looks terrible is because Renee Zellweger is starring in it. I seriously can’t stand her. She’s annoying and perky and she always looks like she has just finished sucking on a lemon. Plus she’s a terrible actress, which makes all the superficial reasons why I hate her stand out even more. Plus she sucks. On lemons.
But then again this film clearly is not intended for me, so hopefully the seniors come out in force to watch her open a terribly trite film out at The Edna. Huzzah!
My One and Only opens this Friday, September 4th at The Edina Theatre.
Once again it is time for The Edina to host the Fall/Winter edition of Talk Cinema, a film series run by Harlan Jacobson that allows its subscribers to screen a unique and varied selection of films before their release dates, and then holds a discussion about them afterwards, which are typically led by film critics, scholars or even the filmmakers themselves. Some of the notably films screened for this series at The Edina last year were Everlasting Moments, The Reader, Joyeux Noel, Two Lovers, Wendy and Lucy, Man on Wire and Slumdog Millionaire.
Tickets run $18 per individual film, or you can buy tickets for the entire series for $168 ($14 per film). But the real advantage of this series is for students, as their tickets are a mere $5 per film, which, when including the fact you are watching these films often several weeks in advance, would mean that is probably the best deal in town. Only caveat to the entire series is the films screen at 10am on Saturdays, but to help ease your suffering free coffee is provided at each film. Please register in advance online or by calling 800-551-9221.
Talk Cinema will screen on the following dates at The Edina Cinema:
September 12, 2009
October 3, 2009
November 7, 2009
November 21, 2009
December 5, 2009
December 19, 2009
January 16, 2010
January 30, 2010
February 13, 2010
February 27, 2010

Lots of additions to the late months of the sheet, hopefully they stay on but with that much lead time who knows at this point. The big addition is the Miyazaki anime film Ponyo.Hopefully he keeps up his seemingly flawless run. And while it is scheduled to open at the Edina, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it actually open at The Uptown. Daniel should also note that his fondest wish has come true, as the new Harry Potter film has been added to the schedule as well. Maybe you should keep your mouth shut next time, Daniel!

Considering I tend to be a bit biased on which films I recommend to watch, I figured I would start posting trailers to all the films that will be playing at Landmark Theatres here in town. That way, you can decide what films you want to watch. What a concept!
First up, The Girl from Monaco. A classic attorney meets girl, giurl turns attorney into a wreck farce that the French love so much. Will the attorney put his head on straight before his trial falls apart?
The Girl from Monaco opens on July 3rd at The Edina Theatre.
