highlowbrow-podcast-logo-copyAnd we’re back! It’s been a few weeks since last James and I met to discuss movies, and after we raced through our last episode of High and Low (Brow) we decided to have a bit more leisurely pace during this one. This episode we our theme is Killer Kids, as we focus on two films that have sadistic, murderous children in them. Those films being The Offspring (also known as From a Whisper to a Scream), starring Vincent Price and the far better known David Cronenberg film The Brood, starring mutant babies and the women who produce them.

But besides spending far too much time discussing sociopathic children, we take some time out of the show to discuss The Road, a film we had both seen earlier yet had not had time to discuss. And of course we round out the episode with our selection show, for the second episode in a row we change things up as this time I’m the one who knows nothing about the theme for next show as James lays out his cunning plan as he wrestles control of the show away from me. Will we end up with good movies for next time? Will I ever let James have any say ever again? Does James secretly curse at me when the tape isn’t recording? Tune in to find out.

If you have any recommendations for films we could watch for the podcast, or want to suggest a potential theme for us to use, feel free to email us and tell us your ideas. If you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe through iTunes or our RSS feed so you can catch every new episode. Also, please friend James on Facebook. Because it will frighten and confuse him.

One more thing, if you enjoy the show feel free to donate to it through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. We’d love to upgrade some of our equipment and anything you donate will go directly towards us getting some decent mics and perhaps even pop screens that aren’t made out of cotton balls.

As always, thanks for listening!

the-white-ribbonA huge amount of new additions this week, with the headliner clearly being Michael Haneke’s newest film, and the most recent Golden Palm winner, White Ribbon. And while that is my most anticipated, I am also eagerly awaiting Men Who Stare at Goats, Ong Bak 2 (I don’t care what you say Joe), Up in the Air and The Fantastic Mr Fox.

In other news, I have left Landmark for Kerasotes. Thursday was my final day with Landmark, and I made sure to have a nice break in between the two jobs by having Friday be my first day with Kerasotes. I had a blast working at Landmark, but Kerasotes offered me an opportunity that I simply couldn’t let pass by. I’ll still be doing the Coming Soon announcements for Landmark, as several of the managers have been nice enough to keep sending me the lists so I can post them, but don’t be surprised if more Kerasotes information starts to creep in the occassional post.

the-imaginarium-of-doctor-parnassus-heath-ledgerNot much has changed with the films being released over the next couple of weeks, and most of the changes to the list seem to be films shuffling around rather than being dropped completely, which is always a welcome sight. That being said, their are a few big changes and additions.

An Education was bumped a week, but will still be opening at The Uptown, as it looks like they think Coco Before Chanel will have a good run their, of which I am less optimistic about. It looks like a decent enough film, but I think it would do better at The Edina then The Uptown, but I digress.

The other big move is pushing the relase of Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, though that is so it can have an exclusive opening at The Uptown, which is fantastic news. I’ve heard good things about Werner Herzog’s latest, and I hope it lives up to the early praise.

As for new additions, their are a few films that I know next to nothing being added to the booking sheet, which include A Single Man, 44 Inch Chest and A Town Called Panic. Hopefully over the coming months I’ll find out a few more details about them. But the big additions are easily Nine and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. Both look like potential Oscar contenders, and Imaginarium is one I am in particular coveting the chance to finally see.

ronald-chevalierNot many new additions but their are some notable ones. First we have The Messenger and (Untitled), films I know nothing about and probably will never see. Besides that I am happy to announce that Thirst will actually play in Minneapolis, though it won’t have a week long run. instead it has been added to the upcoming Midnight Madness schedule, and will play the weekend of November 6th, and you can be sure that I will be in attendance for one of those shows.

The other big addition is one of my most anticipated for the fall season, that being the science fiction farce Gentlemen Broncos. I’ve been looking forward to this film for well over a year, and I am finding it incredibly difficult to remain patient for the adventure of Ronald Chevalier. Hopefully I’ll luck out and be able to attend a screening beforehand, but that looks unlikely.

thirst190Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but Afghan Star is getting its released date pushed, for the fourth time. Of course this is a better fate then Park Chan-wook’s latest film Thirst, which has been dropped and will not open in Minneapolis. This after being delayed twice, and after having an intial release date scheduled a full six weeks after its Chicago opening. As far as I can tell, Thirst only played in Chicago, New York and LA and that is it for the US, which is truly ridiculous. Word is trickling out that the studio (Focus Features/Universal) simply didn’t want to pay to strike prints, let alone market the film. Evidently they thought marketing a vampire film to modern day filmgoer’s was a risk not worth taking. Probably because they are idiots.

In other news Young Victoria had its release date pushed and … ohh … it says here Universal sucks. So it must be true. Hopefully one of the local Independent theatres(The Heights, Parkway or Riverview, I’m not picky) picks up the slack (Hey Trylon, throw us a freaking bone please!) and releases the film so Minneapolis film lovers have a chance to watch it in theatres.
