Due to a busy week I am a little behind in posting this, but make no mistake I am very excited about the latest edition of the Sound Unseen Film Festival here in the Twin Cities. For those that don’t know, Sound Unseen is a festival that focuses on films about musicians and artists, making it quite unique. Per usual the schedule looks very interesting, and I’m particularly intrigued by the 1st Annual Secret Screening on October 2nd. This year the festival will be held at four different locations; the Trylon Microcinema, Cedar Cultural Center, Oak Street Cinema and The Walker Art Center.

A few additions this week, and a couple of films shuffle around on the schedule. Soul Power gets pushed a few weeks back, while The Merry Gentleman falls off the schedule, probably never to be seen. Hopefully The Parkway swoops in and shows it for a week.

As for additions, Jane Campion’s latest film, Bright Star, finally has a release date, and it will open exclusively at The Uptown, while the back end of the schedule sees several new additions with Other Man, No Impact Man, The Boys are Back and Crude receiving bookings. But, of course, the big addition is A Serious Man, the Coen Brother’s latest film has been booked for an exclusive engagement at The Uptown. But keep an eye on The Walker, as they are in talks to screen the film much earlier then the October release date.

I’m probably not supposed to reveal that little detail but really, like either party is reading this blog.

So I guess people are kind of excited for this new Steven Spielburg movie coming out this weekend. Who would have guessed that? But for some of us lucky few their is an alternative being shown this weekend, and no, I’m not talking about Uwe Boll’s ridiculous new film Postal. The alternative? OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies, a James Bond style spy spoof that lampoons both that illustrious franchise and the movie making style of the 1950’s.

DVD releases are spares as usual this week. It’s saying something that Renny Harlin’s new direct to video film Cleaner is probably in the upper half of the releases, at least in terms of quality. Their are a few other semi-interesting Independent films getting released as well this week, with the critically acclaimed documentary Darfur Now and The Walker the most obvious. But the one that catches my eye is the documentary What Would Jesus Buy? A documentary on the controversial Reverend Billy, and his quest to convince Americans to stop shopping. What better way to honor his teachings then to buy the DVD?
