When it comes to a ridiculous premise for a horror film, I’m quite sure The Wig rules on high. Quick plot synopsis for all of you: Girl gets cancer. Girl receives wig to cover up bald head. Wig is evil. Wig goes on a killing spree. The End.

Oddly enough The Wig actually finds a way to treat that premise with respect and even creates a somewhat disturbing and creepy mood. Sure their a plot holes you could steer Titanic through, but damn if the atmosphere doesn’t positively drip off the screen.  I almost regret giving this movie away. Almost.

So to get your copy of The Wig simply send me an email: matt.gamble at wherethelongtailends dot com

Write in the subject: Gimmie free stuff!

Then just tell me which movie (or movies if the case may be) you have chosen to rent/buy because of this site. And don’t just say all of them you lousy cheaters!

Keeping everything short and sweet this week as I have chores to do. And other important stuff and stuff. And stuff.

Bushel full of new releases on DVD this week, many of them either good or interesting! Who knew that was possible? The Spiderwick Chronicles is the big mainstream release of the week, well, the good release anyways. What can I say? Throw in some angry trolls trying to steal books from children and I am totally there! No Balrog, you may not have their Choose Your Own Adventures!

The big Indie DVD release of the week is the animated film Persepolis that swept every award at the Oscars last spring. I know that sounds a little crazy, but I have no time to fact check this week. The other release is the dark, morbid and quite funny In Bruges. Either Colin Firth, Colin Hanks, or Colin Farrell stars. Some sort of Colin anyway.

But the one I am recommending this week is the Korean horror film The Wig. Not only is this a movie about a killer hair piece, it actually treats it in all seriousness and with deep respect. Because of this it is actually sort of creepy, while coincidentally being utterly stupid. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe the feeling watching The Wig.

As for new releases their are a few Independent films that catch my eye. First is Mother of Tears, Dario Argento’s newest horror film. Sure it looks like a made for TV movie, and yes Dario will probably have his daughter Asia do something that is unquestionably “not right”, and I know that it sucks. But it is Dario Argento.

Also getting a very limited release is the documentary Surfwise which is kind of like Swiss Family Robinson on wheels, only with that Capturing the Friedmans kind of creepy feeling.

But the big Independent release is Mongol, which continues it limited schedule with wider release here in the states. It focuses on a kinder, gentler Genghis Khan and audiences everywhere are standing up and cheering at his achievements. It might also be the feel good movie of the summer. Remember, you heard it here first.

As always trailers are after the break!
