I am totally a day late and a dollar short. I had to work early yesterday and I also wanted to finally swing by the comic book shop to pick up my comics for the past month. I really just wanted to pick up a trade from Top Shelf called Veeps, but evidently it isn’t coming out until next week.

For the second week in a row the theaters are flooded with 50,000 new releases, all of the potentially crappy. That being said, I am still interested in seeing Clint Eastwood’s latest effort Changeling, even though his last film was so awful it almost put me off his movies for good.

DVD releases are even tougher as they are limited AND crappy. I don’t care what buzz you heard about Transsiberian, it is truly terrible. Avoid it like the plague. Thus my DVD recommendation is for When Did You Last See Your Father, a film that I heard was good, but looks far too sappy for me to ever watch it for fear of crying like a 32 year old me tends to cry, in bunches.

Forgive me if my mind is somewhere else today. It is difficult to select new releases to recommend when I have recently received word that Bruce Campbell, The Chin himself, will be coming to the Twin Cities for the opening of My Name is Bruce. Which means I will get to meet him. This, along with meeting the Coen Brothers a few weeks ago, really makes me so much cooler then any of you. In my mind.

Anyways, it is slim pickings once again for DVD releases on Tuesday. I’m tempted to pick The Happening, which I actually did enjoy, but decided I’d pick a film I wanted to see but only had a split-second release in theaters. That movie being Boy A.

For theatrical releases it seems as if somewhere close to two dozen films are being released this weekend. While Flash of Genius, Appaloosa, Religulous and A Girl Cut in Two all look interesting enough for me to watch at some point, this week I am recommending a movie that I have already seen, enjoyed quite a bit and am quite confident most people will not like at all because nothing really happens in it. This movie is better known as Blindness.

During the course of our relationship I have “forced” Anna to watch several movies that she had absolutely no interest in, thus resulting in several treacherous crossroads for us to navigate. And even with huge successes like The Descent, Fight Club and American Movie, it has still proven to be quite the struggle to convince her that my love of a particular film might actually translate into being worth her time to view it. Recently such an event happened involving Slither.

Now when Slither was released about 2 years ago we had been dating for several months and my birthday was fast approaching. I had gotten some passes to an advance screening of the film that was to occur on my birthday. Now, with a March birthday it can be a bit of a struggle to find even a competent birthday film, so I was quite excited at the prospect of watching a halfway decent horror comedy as my own personal birthday present to myself.

I am suffering through yet another weak of tepid interest in theatrical new releases. Sure last week had Burn After Reading, but as it stands now it seems that right now their simply isn’t much worth getting excited about in theaters. Unfortunately, it looks like it might be another week or two before the big guns start getting rolled out for Oscar season. As for this week, Battle in Seattle at least looks possibly interesting, though I would be far more interested if it was a documentary on the subject of the 1999 WTO protests rather then a reenactment filled with Hollywood stars. But at least it isn’t a Dane Cook movie.

As for DVD releases, their is a clear winner in this department. It is a movie that I enjoyed quite a bit when I watched it in the theater, but have been eagerly awaiting the inevitable release due to its infinite quotability. This movie drips trendils of awesome wherever it goes. Chuck Norris kneels before this movie. This movie, is The Foot Fist Way. Meditate on that.

It is going to why another short summary as yet again a total dearth of quality flicks is being released in either the theaters or on DVD this week. Theatrical releases are particularly putrid this week as the only major release is Bangkok Dangerous, which looks like pure utter crap. Here in Minneapolis the only new indie release is Boy A, which at least looks interesting, though I’m in no rush to see it.

As far as DVD releases go, they are pretty dull, with the two mainstream big releases being Baby Mamma and The Forbidden Kingdom. Thankfully, one of my favorite movies of the year so far, The Fall, is being released this week and is easily my pick this week. Please watch it, as it is outstanding. You can read my full review over at Cinema Fusion to give yourself a better idea o what the film is about and why I liked it.

Going to be a quick post today as there is seriously not much to recommend this week in theaters or on DVD. Babylon A.D. is my pick for theatrical new release of the week, primarily due to my blatant sci-fi fanboy nature as well as to see if the claims by director Mathieu Kassovitz that the film was ruined by the studio are true.

DVD releases are especially slim pickings this week, leading me to choosing another relatively obscure and hard to find release in Cannibal. Cannibal is based on the true story of Armin Meiwes, a man who placed an ad on the Internet requesting someone who would allow him to eat them. Remarkably, someone responded to the ad and allowed themselves to be eaten. I must I have a bit of morbid curiosity over such a tale, though I have no idea how I am going to track down this film as I can’t even find an official site for the film, let alone a trailer. Evidently the hunt is on.
