Coming soon to Landmark Theaters
by Matt Gamble on Apr.16, 2009, under Previews
I’ve been tossing around the idea of posting the booking sheet for the Minneapolis Landmark Theaters for some time. My initial concern was that it might step on Andrew’s What’s Happening posts, but decided that his is devoted to the upcoming week’s special events while this is primarily just a list of films that will be released over the coming months. More like a first glance while Andrew provides the needed filler once the opening dates arrive. Though any thoughts on whether I should keep up with these posts would be greatly appreciated.

Rummaging through the Old Maids (4/3/09)
by Matt Gamble on Apr.03, 2009, under Features, Movies, Reviews, Trailers
Finally a week in which their are multiple quality selections to choose from for theatrical releases. Granted the mainstream offerings at the multiplex are awful, but between Alien Trespass, 12 and Adventureland you have plenty of quality options to choose from. Though my recommendation is for Adventureland, which is nothing like the baudy sex comedy that it is being marketed as. Rather it is a rich coming of age story that is surprisingly dark, very dense and very rich. I might even say it is the fillet of this weeks offerings.
As for DVD releases, they are almost universally crap, excepot for one lone, rogue film. You might know it as the film I used to launch a totally unprevoked, and ultimately futile, attack of Star Tribune film critic Colin Covert. That’s right, just two weeks after it was released in theaters, Shuttle is being released on DVD. So now is your chance to rent the film, and discover for yourself just how right, or wrong Colin is.

Rummaging through the Old Maids (3/27/09)

While mainstream theaters are being deluged with mediocre films, here in Minneapolis we have a few Independent films being released that look very interesting. First off is Frederico Fellini’s Amarcord, which is getting an exclusive re-release at the Lagoon. And while I’ve heard it is fantastic, the film I am even more interested in viewing is Everlasting Moments, the Swedish film perhaps best known for being submitted for Oscar consideration over Let the Right One In.
DVD releases are a bit drier as the mainstream films are almost universally awful, so the weight of the week falls upon the foreign film releases. Of course the big name release is Slumdog Millionaire, but make sure to keep an eye out for the French thriller Tell No One and the Spanish time travelling genre film TimeCrimes.

Rummaging through the Old Maids (1/2/09)
by Matt Gamble on Jan.02, 2009, under Features, Previews, Trailers
I’m having a hard time coming up with a recommendation for a theatrical release this week. The mainstream release is Defiance, which sucks something awful, and the only new Oscar bait being released in the arthouse theaters is Revolutionary Road. I’m sure it has fine acting and is all wonderfully melodramatic, but I find myself only passably interested in it because it looks like Mad Men only not as good. So go see it if you must, like I care.
As for DVD releases the picking there aren’t much better. Though that has more to do with me having not seen any of them as far as I can tell. Thus this week I will shirk my responsibilities and pass off the recommendation onto Daniel Getahun over at Getafilm.com who has seen The Grocer’s Son and liked it quite a bit. So go read his short review (and the rest of his excellent site while you are at it), rent the movie and if it stinks remember that I’m just the messenger, he’s the one who sucks.
As always trailers are after the break!
