Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film, The Hurt Locker, certainly has caught my eye, but I’m still not sure if this film will be as good as it appears it will be. She’s made good films like Point Break and Strange Days, but also terrible films like Blue Steel and K-19: The Widowmaker. And the fanboys will hate me for this, but Near Dark is totally overrated. Hopefully, though, this ends up being another one of her good films.
Interest level: Rising
The Hurt Locker will open exclusively on July 10th at the Minneapolis Uptown Theatre.

I’m a fan of Bigelow’s work. Even when one of her movies fails, there’s no denying its energy. I’ve enjoyed almost all of her movies, even her work on Wild Palms. I also liked K-19, but it was inevitable because of my bizarre weakness for submarine movies.
I have a friend who is convinced that Point Break is the greatest movie ever made.
And The Hurt Locker looks awesome, by the way. I can’t wait to see it.

I was a lot more excited for this before the hype machine took over. I’ve already seen Best Picture nomination talk around it in heavy doses. For my money the best Iraq war movie so far has been Stop-Loss, but I know I stand alone on that one.
Still, I’ll see this ASAP. I just wish my expectations weren’t so inflated now.
