So I was reading the latest issue of Wired when I stumbled upon an article on the making of WarGames that absolutely fawns all over the movie. Since this is the 25th anniversary of the release of the film this year it seems as if geeks are coming out of the woodwork praising the film for introducing the world to computers, the various precursers to the Internet, and hacking.
So yes, lets hear it for the film responsible for that series of tubes that sends you daily reminders on how you can claim billions of dollars that are just sitting around with nothing to do in Nigeria.
And closed circuit to my girlfriend Anna, who was just a wee babe when the movie was released and thus has never seen the film, be prepared to get your geek on for the next week as I force you to watch Tron and The Last Starfighter in a stunning display of 4-bit special effects glory.
Nerd up!

God… I’m starting to get mixed feelings on anniversaries. At first it’s like “Hey, cool, it’s been 15 years since Nevermind came out!” but then it’s like “Holy crap… War Games was 25 years ago??? What have I done with my life???”
p.s. After this, I say they should pull out an anniversary screening for Cloak and Dagger!

I still find it hard to believe that my girlfriend has never seen this movie. Next she’ll be telling me she’s never heard of Condorman or Escape from Witch Mountain.

It’s harder for me. I’m married to a Polish woman who was born on the same day I saw Return of the Jedi in theaters, so there is a lot of mandatory cinema she’s missed out on due to geography and age. I’ll make her into a geek whether she likes it or not.

My girlfriend at least owned a Bantha when I started dating here. Though she can’t remember if she has ever watched any of the films. Let alone the TV movies, the animated shows, the Christmas Special and so on an so forth that really all is required viewing.

When the ladyfriend is watching the inevitable DROIDS/EWOKS cartoon marathon and wondering how it was she lived this long without experiencing such animated bliss, she’ll be thanking you with tears in her eyes.
