Next I review another much maligned film, a film that had the audacity of being nothing like the film it was a sequel to. No musical numbers with choreographed dance routines. No cutesy inhabitants. No disembodied heads … well … to be exact this one has 31 disembodied heads, not just one. And of course, no Judy Garland. That is because next week’s film is the woefully underrated and unappreciated Return to Oz.

    Speaking of Judy Garland, this week over at Yahoo version of The Judy Garland Experience they are featuring not one, but two performances from Judy’s September 1965 run at the Greek Theater. The first night is a head on concert where Judy triumph’s magnificently! The second night is a more casual affair as Judy is joined onstage by Johnny Mathis, Martha Raye, and Mickey Rooney. Nobody is feeling any pain at this particular performance.There are also tons of other new files posted including stops Judy made at the Dick Haymes and Bing Crosby radio programs as well other Judy rarities.The non Judy files posted are A recording of Angela Lansbury’s tour de force performance as Mildred in Of Human Bondage, Frank Sinatra in an ultra rare concert performance from Atlantic City, and highlights from an unreleased 1954 Doris Day soundtrack.
    If you are not familiar with The Judy Garland Experience on Yahoo please come by and check it out. along with the constantly changing files, we also have one of the largest rare Judy phot collections on the web! Our membership includes fans of all levels, Garland family members and assosiates, authors of Garland biographies, people who have made films about Judy, other celebrities, historians, and more! The only one missing is you!Here is the link, I am sure once you visit you will never want to leave:

    I read the book of this as a kid, and I remember the start was extremely creepy: I wonder if the movie also began with Auntie Em taking Dorothy for electro-shock therapy. I kid you not, that’s how the book begins.

    The only time I saw any of the movie was at the Oscar ceremony the following year – it was nominated in the special effects category, if memory serves.

    Traveling Blackbird-
    That’s how the film begins as well. I used to watch it all the time when I was little and it’s mad creepy, especially the wheelers

    The movie starts out with the electro shock therapy as well. I use to watch it quite a bit as a child and it’s mad creepy, especially the wheelers.

    I like the concept of the site. We’ve had thoughts to dabble in this format on my site, but we have our own vibe going and it’s nice to find a spot with regular posts pertaining to these cult films of past.

    I’d like to extend an invitation for you to join our forum and to post updates and links to your reviews in the film section. I wouldn’t delete any of your links as spam and you may be able to pull some traffic from it.

    Thanks

    Sorry, I can’t pass up an opportunity to plug my own recent thoughts on Return to Oz: http://getafilm.blogspot.com/2008/05/underrated-motm-return-to-oz-1985.html.

    Definitely looking forward to yours – the more people who appreciate this sucker the better!

    Whoops, looks like it didn’t go through because I was trying to whore a link out to my own site. I was just saying this is a great old movie that I just featured as my Underrated Movie of the Month in June. Everybody who commented and had seen it was pretty happy, which I imagine will be the case with you, too. Looking forward to it. There’s a Return to Oz fansite that might help with research, by the way. I won’t risk a link again…

    BEWARE THE WHEELERS!

    I just got to see Return to Oz on the BIG SCREEN!
    The Castro Theater in SF played this along with Beetlejuice and Meet the Feebles, all 35mm prints. Best day of my movie-watching life.

    As others have already noted, the film does start out like the book and is surprisingly dark for a kid’s film. A Disney kids film no less.

    @Dead C
    Thanks for the compliments. BTW I totally dig your sites header. It’s great stuff. I signed up for your forum but I’ve got a crazy week ahead of me so it might be a bit before I can post on it.

    @Daniel
    You got snagged by my Spam filter for some reason. Everythign should be fine now. Nice review on Return to Oz as well. I’ve seen it a few times over the years and only recently convinced Anna to finally sit down and watch it which is what prompted me to review it for this site.

    @Scott
    That is a fantastic lineup. Was the Meet the Feebles print in decent shape? How long ago did you watch it? I’m going have to bug the guys over at The Uptown to book it. I just assumed their weren’t any prints in circulation.

    Maybe I don’t say it enough Matt, but I appreciate this site.

    Thanks a lot Jonathan. I appreciate it.
