Next week’s film is one I have wanted to see for some time, only its limited release and subsequently falling out of print made this film incredibly difficult to find. But why do I want to see this film? Well, because it is the second film in history (the first being Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope) to attempt shooting the entire film in one continuous shot. Not only that, it stars the immortal Bruce Campbell. That’s right, next week’s movie is the elusive, immortal, Running Time.

I could be mistaken, but I believe that Russian Ark (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318034/) is the only feature film to ACTUALLY be filmed in one shot.
Rope does a pretty good job with masking the cuts, although if you are paying attention it is easy to figure out. I have not seen Running Time, but I imagine it is the same.

I still really need to get my hands on Running Time.

Yeah, Running Time has 30 cuts, but they are all hidden, so it certainly appears to be done in one shot. The film has an outstanding commentary with Campbell and writer/director Josh Becker that explains how Becker wrote the cuts into the script so as to best disguise them, and evidently several critics couldn’t believe that their actually were any in the film.
And I finally tracked down my copy on eBay Jonathan, for a pretty reasonable price too. I’m sure more will pop up soon enough.
When Bruce come to the Twin Cities in a few weeks, I’m pretty sure this is the DVD I am going to have him sign. Hopefully that will convince him to love and adopt me. Save me Brisco County Jr, you’re my only hope!

I’ve never heard of this one. Now I can’t wait to see it.

ROPE doesn’t even hide all the cuts. There’s an obvious one at the beginning where the camera pans up the side of a building to a window, you hear a scream, and you cut inside to the victim being strangled. After that the game begins.
I’ve seen RUSSIAN ARK. It’s an astounding technical and logistics feat, but I don’t think the idea is any more than a gimmick at present.
