Daily Picks for the 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival – Part One

2018 Milwaukee Film Festival

With the 10th Milwaukee Film Festival rapidly approaching, I thought it would be a service to provide some picks as to what are the most interesting, entertaining, or flat out artistic films at the upcoming festival. We’ll start out with the first five days.

Day One – Thursday, October 18th – SCIENCE FAIR

Day one is a gimme, as there are no other films than SCIENCE FAIR on the schedule. It’s no secret that day one of the festival is essentially a party, but SCIENCE FAIR looks like a winner regardless. That there’s a party afterwards is the cherry on top. Tickets are sold out, but there’s always the rush line.

Day Two – Friday, October 19th – FIVE FINGERS FOR MARSEILLES

Perhaps you don’t want to get totally serious after a long work week. If so, this western-tinged thriller looks both thrillingly shot but also entertaining as all get out. I’m sure we’ve seen the story in one version or other before, but this looks like a strong new version and a fun Friday night.

Alternative: HALE COUNTY THIS MORNING, THIS EVENING is for those that don’t need to wade into the more serious end of the film festival. An impressionistic documentary about a rural Alabama community, it’s reputed to be impressively shot and to be very much a portrait of the moment. It’s in the Competition Program of the 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival so that’s already an impressive endorsement.

Day Three – Saturday, October 20th – A PAGE OF MADNESS

One of the big events during the 10 year run of the Milwaukee Film Festival is the silent film presentation. The 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival ups the ante by bringing in the 1926 silent Japanese film, A PAGE OF MADNESS, set in an insane asylum. Even better, Alloy Orchestra is going to be supplying a live score, and nobody does live scores better. It’s Halloween season after all and this promises to be both thrilling and well out of the ordinary.

Alternate: If silent films aren’t your thing, there’s a documentary on the craft beer scene called BREWMASTER that may be right down your alley. Especially as it’s followed up with an event at Burnhearts.

Day Four – Sunday, October 21st – BISBEE ’17

Blurring the line between reality and fiction, past and present, BISBEE ’17 promises to be one of the most talked about films of the 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival and the year in documentary film in general.

Alternative: Let’s give some love to local restaurant YEN CHING which is the subject of a documentary as part of the Cream City Cinema program. This screening is being held at the Fox-Bay Cinema Grill, which is certain to solve some cravings afterwards.

Day Five – Monday, October 22nd – I AM NOT A WITCH

You may wish to skip out of work for I AM NOT A WITCH which is already an awards winner and a submitted entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. The Milwaukee Film Festival moved back several weeks in the hopes of landing some bigger films and while I don’t know if this is one of them, it certainly fits the bill. Especially if it lands a spot at the Academy Awards.

Alternative: The MILWAUKEE SHOW I is always a popular spotlight for local talent. Especially as I don’t expect everybody to be able to skip out on work. It’s a great way for the community to bond and celebrate the talented artists in our midst.

We’ll be back tomorrow with a look at days six to ten of the 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival. The 2018 Milwaukee Film Festival runs from October 18, 2018 to November 1, 2018. Information and tickets can be found at Milwaukee Film’s website.
