Cabin in the Woods Film Festival Podcast – Ep 11 – Inside
Where the Long Tail Ends

And we’re back! This time on the Cabin in the Woods Film Festival Podcast Angela (of The Film Confessional Podcast)and I take a user submission and I face her wrath! You see, this all started when somehow some people on Row Three once again started complaining about people liking Cabin in the Woods too much. Now, this discussion quickly turned into horror films for women, or the lack of them, and Kurt Halfyard made the rather bold suggestion that the French New Wave Horror film Inside was a great horror film for women.

Now, for those of you who don’t know much about the film, I think pretty much anyone besides Kurt would never make the claim it is a great horror film for women. but nonetheless, I throw that Canuck under the bus and unleash the Angela upon him.

But once we move past the initial rage and frustration from a modern woman scorned, we move on to one of the more interesting discussions that I have had the pleasure of having with Angela. We discuss the state of horror, the male obsession with it, the way various media write for women and we even lift up the covers and talk about the underlying sexual dynamics that are present in the horror genre. Its a fascinating discussion, and I think many of you might have to think twice about how you view horror films.

In other news, this is our first show with our new fancy mics and mixing board. It was something I’ve wanted to do for some time, and I’ve spent the past few months slowly acquiring the pieces necessary to pull this off. I’m pretty happy with everything so far, but this is still pretty new tech for me so don’t be surprised if their are some bumps along the way. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new sound, as well as the show itself and suggestions for films that might be a bit more geared to women for some future shows.

As always, thanks for listening!

In his place is my personal placeholder, Angela (of the Film Confessional Podcast), who was patient enough to sit through this episode with me. An episode, that just happens to be an extended edition for no particular reason, outside of me wanting to use that funky title for the show.

First up on Spoiler Alert! is the newest Quentin Tarantino creation, Django Unchained, a sort neo-spaghetti western with a strong comedic twist. It stars half of Tarantino’s rotating troup of actors, as well as including new editions Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio. This is an odd film with an even odder release date that so far seems to be leaving audiences and critics trumpeting it as Tarantino’s best yet. But is it?

After that we settle in as we journey through space and time to a land of wonder and mystery, also known as New Zealand, the land made famous for the Lord of the Rings films, and now for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Will Angela decry HFR as the WORST THING EVAH? Will her notorious motion sickness end the journey unexpectedly? Do you see what I just did there?

As always thanks for listening!

And we’re back! This time we come at you from Pepin, WI, the home of the Flyway Film Festival. While we’ve posted several interviews so far, including the fantastic Jittering with James series, but this episode of High and Low (Brow) might be our most anticipated, thanks to guest stars Angela Fabbrini (Film Confessional Podcast) and Jay Cheel (Film Junk & The Documentary Blog).

This episodes theme, For the Birds, was picked just for the Flyway Film Festival as it got its name from Pepin, WI being on the primary migratory path (called flyways) in North America. First up for review is the documentary The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill which follows the exploits of a wild flock of parrots roaming around San Francisco and the eccentric man who has devoted his life to studying them. Next up is the British classic Kes from director Ken Loach. It is one of Great Britain’s most beloved children’s classics, but you know as well as I do that doesn’t mean we’ll have anything nice to say about it.

Be sure to stay for our selection show, as Angela is on the hook for coming up with next episode’s them, while Jay has the challenge of selecting the films for us to watch. Oh yeah, and somewhere in this show, Jay and I might finally go head to head about a couple of films people have been hoping we’d talk about. Those being Compliance and The Poughkeepsie Tapes. Make no mistake about it, this is the episode that you’ve all been waiting for.

If you have any recommendations for films we could watch for the podcast, or want to suggest a potential theme for us to use, or simply want to tell James how awesome he is, feel free to email us and tell us your ideas. If you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe through iTunes or our RSS feed so you can catch every new episode. Where the Long Tail EndsHigh and Low (Brow) – Series 4 Episode 2 – For the Birds
Where the Long Tail Ends
And we’re back!
Also, please friend James on Facebook, Letterboxd and his second attempt at Twitter. Because it will frighten and confuse him. And while you’re there be sure to join our relatively new Facebook group devoted to Where the Long Tail Ends.
One more thing, if you enjoy the show feel free to donate to it through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. I’ve got some big plans to do some upgrading our equipment over the coming months, and every little bit helps. And, as always, thanks for listening!

Where the Long Tail Ends

And James is back! Once again James has descended upon the small towns of Pepin and Stockholm Wisconsin to attend the 2012 Flyway Film Festival. This time James sits down with French Candien Filmmakers Phillipe Lupien and Vincent Ethier of Lupeth Films who crafted the award winning short, Punchy and Toothpick. Phillipe and Vincent have actually made it down from Montreal once before, and Punch and Toothpick is there third film to be shown at the Flyway Film Festival.

But James has no interest in that, instead focusing his increasingly tough questions on what it was like to work with children, forcing them to kiss behind closed doors and having children play with drug addicts for their audiences amusement. The interview may be short and sweet, but it is still nothing short of awesome. Be sure to leave a comment for James on the interview, and even ask other questions of Phillipe and Vincent who may just randomly show up and respond in French. Be sure to check out their short film Le Diable en Personne, which is now streaming on Vimeo, it is truly outstanding and a joy to watch. And as always, thanks for listening!

Where the Long Tail EndsJittering with James – Vincent Ethier & Phillipe Lupien @ Flyway Film Festival
Where the Long Tail EndsAnd James is back!

In what might be our quickest turn around ever (not really, but just let us have this one) we are back with our series opening show of High and Low (Brow). This show’s theme, Future Strange, was submitted by a listener and it certainly lived up to its title as these were two of the oddest films we have encountered to date.

First up for us is the rare genre film from the great Robert Altman, Quintet. This film, which takes place after a new Ice Age has wiped out most of humanity, and those people that do survive are certainly lacking their own forms of humanity. Next up is the British comedy-thriller-science fiction-fantasy-glam-mod-mystery film The Final Programme, which is an adaption of the Michael Moorcock novel of the same name. This film is a bit difficult to describe and sum up in a few words, but make no mistake, it is a movie. That is something both James and I can agree on.

Following that we bring you yet another selection show, this time our theme will reflect the upcoming Flyway Film Festival, as both James and I will be in attendance. We’re hoping to record down there once again, which will mark our third year of doing so. Hopefully, we will have a number of guest stars as well to join in on the fun and festivities. And maybe even High and Low (Brow) as well.

We’d love to upgrade some of our equipment and anything you donate will go directly towards us getting some decent mics and perhaps even pop screens that aren’t made out of cotton balls.
This time James and I are actually able to stay somewhat close to on schedule as we carefully leave our wheelhouse and attempt to circumnavigate a trio of musicals on this episode of High and Low (Brow). First up is the Linda Blair fronted Roller Boogie, followed with the bizarre attempt at being hip called Rockula, and finishing up with the 90 minutes music video that is Electric Dreams.

Not to be satisfied with giving you 33% more reviews, we also present you with yet another James Gillham: Pop Culture Guru segment, dive head first into James’ own personal dreamscape and attempt to ascertain whether or not James trusts the computer (and by proxy, me) to record an episode of High and Low (Brow). Needless to say this is a jam packed episode and is a great way to close out this series. Make sure to stick around for the selection show, as this time we proudly choose from a user submitted theme and it is a doozy.

One more thing, if you enjoy the show feel free to donate to it through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. This time Angela (of The Film Confessional Podcast) and I come to you with a very special episode of the Cabin in the Woods Film Festival Podcast (you can tell by the far more serious theme music), as I have attempted to trick Angela into watching the film Compliance and she, being an intelligent modern woman, didn’t fall for it because she knows I am a liar. That all being said, after countless debate on how I would edit this show I have finally completed a show in which we debate for an hour on whether or not I am a bad person because I watched Compliance. There are a lot of layers.

But beyond that we discuss the merits of psychological torture, marketing exploitation movies, whether or not Compliance would classify as a exploitation film due to its subject matter and Angela’s trust issues, which I try to manipulate whenever I can for your listening enjoyment. That’s right dear listeners, I face the wrath of a woman scorned so you can listen to me getting yelled at. You’re welcome.
