High and Low (Brow) – Series 3 Episode 3 – Disasters!

Posted on Oct 27, 2011 by | 2 comments

And we’re back! This time James and I are coming to you from the Flyway Film Festival, and like last year we have invited some guests to record with us. Joining us for this episode are Jay Cheel (Film Junk & The Documentary Blog), Andrew James (Row Three) and Angela Fabbrini (The Film Confessional Podcast) making this the most star-studded High & Low (Brow) ever!

In this episode we focus on disaster movies, but while doing that we discovered that both of these films are docudramas as well, which makes for a nice discussion on whether or not these movies might actually be a documentary. First up is the classic rendition of the sinking of the Titanic, A Night to Remember. Coupled with that we have the compelling and terrifying The War Game, which depicts what might happen if a nuclear bomb went off in the UK, with shocking detail. After that, make sure to stick around for our blind selection portion of the show, as our guests pick the theme and the films that James and I will be watching on our next episode.

If you have any recommendations for films we could watch for the podcast, or want to suggest a potential theme for us to use, or simply want to tell James how awesome he is, feel free to email us and tell us your ideas. If you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe through iTunes or our RSS feed so you can catch every new episode. Also, please friend James on Facebook. Because it will frighten and confuse him. And while you’re there be sure to join our relatively new Facebook group devoted to Where the Long Tail Ends.

One more thing, if you enjoy the show feel free to donate to it through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. We’d love to upgrade some of our equipment and anything you donate will go directly towards us getting some decent mics and perhaps even pop screens that aren’t made out of cotton balls.

As always, thanks for listening!

Opening Theme – Adonai by Ennio Morricone

I review movies. I run a movie theatre. I annoy people. I let my dogs lick my face whenever they want. Sometimes I'm even a halfway decent human.

  1. Just wanted to say that you guys rock! Being a long-time FilmJunk listener I decided to check out High and Low (Brow) now that Jay was guesting once again, and while I wasn’t expecting much, thinking it would probably be something dry along the lines of Row Three, you guys took me by surprise and pulled off an excellent show. I’ve then went back through the archives and listened to all HaLB plus the (sadly) defunct Spoiler Alert! podcasts and while you both seem to diss your own shows when you talk too much about personal stuff, that’s when I think you’re at your best. James really is like the Bizarro Reed, and when you two get into talking about your stories it’s Cantankerous-esque – I love it! By far the best story has to be you guys playing DnD and the police storming the neighborhood. The only major thing I’ve really had a beef with yet is your review of the Dolph Lundgren CLASSIC OF CLASSICS – Showdown in Little Tokyo. It is indeed pretty shitty all around, but I think the comedy works as intended and a few of the fight scenes are entertaining, and as you said, when nothing of it works it still entertains on it’s on behalf. Anyway, I’m rambling on for far too long, just keep up the good work. I really hope that you guys keep up the High and Low (Brow) podcast and possibly try out something new again at some point akin to Spoiler Alert!

    • Thanks for checking us out, Kasper! I am not sure if we’ve got any Spoiler Alert episodes in the offing… we’ll just have to wait and see if anything tickles our fancy. We’re for sure going to keep working on High and Low(Brow), because I think we both have fun recording.

      Anhow, thanks again for listening!
