High and Low (Brow) – Series 4 Ep 10 – Schlock Rock

High and :pw (Brow) title card

And we’re back! We’re a couple weeks past our intended release date thanks primary to James returning to being a useful member of society. Oh sure he has a job and is interacting with people, but he’s supposed to be watching movies and recording episodes of High and Low (Brow). But, you know, I’m not bitter.

This is our series finale for the show as we plan on taking a short Holiday break before returning again in January. Of course we still plan to release some other podcasts during that time, just not new episodes of High and Low (Brow). But for this episode, kindly submitted to us by listener Rick Vance, we visit a couple of relatively obscure Rock & Roll based films. First up is Wild Zero (1999), a Japanese punk rock film that you have to see to believe. Following that we have Rock & Rule (1983), a Canadian animated film that has an incredible soundtrack yet struggled to ever be shown outside of Canada.

Besides that, we wax nostalgic on James’ recent failures, and we throw out some ideas for film series to watch before finally getting down and dirty and coming up with a new segment that will no doubt quickly turn ugly, and you’ll have a front row seat for the entire debacle.

If you have any recommendations for films we could watch for High and Low (Brow), or want to suggest a potential theme for us to use, or simply want to tell James how awesome he is, feel free to email us and tell us your ideas. If you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe through any of the feeds in the right hand column so you can catch every new episode. Also, please friend James on Facebook, Letterboxd and his second attempt at Twitter. Because it will frighten and confuse him. And while you’re there be sure to join our relatively new Facebook group devoted to Where the Long Tail Ends.

One more thing, if you enjoy the show feel free to donate to it through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. We’ve done some upgrading to our equipment in recent months, and every little bit helps as we continue to try ans stay ahead of the curve.

And, as always, thanks for listening!

Opening Theme – Adonai by Ennio Morricone
Closing Music – The Way We Move by Langhorne Slim

I review movies. I run a movie theatre. I annoy people. I let my dogs lick my face whenever they want. Sometimes I'm even a halfway decent human.

  1. So it came down to The Crawling Eye vs. Quatermass 2 in the blind selection. I’d like to cue Robert DeNiro saying “You blew it” for Mr. Gamble.

I’m down with a Tea & Crumpets “Downton Abbey” podcast. You almost should do Gosford Park as episode 0.

If you’re casting about for series to do, I’d remind the two of you that Hammer has several. Knowing James’ affinity for vampires, I’d suggest that Hammer’s Dracula and Karnstein series are equally viable.

And I’d like to hear High and Low (Brow) expound on High and Low some day.

    • Gosford Park is a very good idea. I’ll see what Angela thinks of it as I don’t think she’s ever seen the film.

  2. That is how my other experiences showing Wild Zero to friends has gone. Either they love the shotgun blast approach and the bits of insanity or they enjoy it but ultimately are cold to it, either way it was a fun listen.

    • I think your level on intoxication is probably pretty important as well.

      • That is true probably why it comes with a popup video drinking game that will destroy you on any type of liquor.

If you wanted to know what the triggers were in the mode:
        Anyone drinks
        Anyone combs their hair
        A head explodes
        Fire shoots out of anything
        Anyone says ROCK AND ROLL
