High and Low (Brow) – Series 4 Ep 9 – 50’s Fromage

And we’re back! Once again James and I maintain our schedule with relative accuracy (for us anyways) and come back to you with our fifth show (what a number) this month. It’s a packed episode of High and Low (Brow) and a bit of a marathon (or perhaps a slog) but helping things out is that we’ve had yet another tech upgrade and purchased a new Shure microphone for our use. I’ve had James on a Shure since we first upgraded to to the new mics and mixing boards but I’d been on a pretty bare bones mic that worked ok and was a serious improvement over our previous setup but was for me the next obvious upgrade. I also bought a pop screen for myself (James’ hasn’t arrived yet) and suddenly we now have a semi-professional setup and a pretty solid sounding podcast. What a concept.

As for the actual content, James and I sit down with a theme submitted by listener Mark Stevens, wonderfully titled 50’s Fromage. We sit down with two films from 1954, the first being a noirish sci-fi film called Target Earth and we follow that up with the somewhat well known nuclear ant film, Them! We have a pretty good discussion on both though one of them comes out as the sure fire winner.

If you have any recommendations for films we could watch for High and Low (Brow), or want to suggest a potential theme for us to use, or simply want to tell James how awesome he is, feel free to email us and tell us your ideas. If you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe through any of the feeds in the right hand column so you can catch every new episode. Also, please friend James on Facebook, Letterboxd and his second attempt at Twitter. Because it will frighten and confuse him. And while you’re there be sure to join our relatively new Facebook group devoted to Where the Long Tail Ends.

One more thing, if you enjoy the show feel free to donate to it through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. We’ve done some upgrading to our equipment in recent months, and every little bit helps as we continue to try ans stay ahead of the curve.

And, as always, thanks for listening!

Opening Theme – Adonai by Ennio Morricone
Closing Music – Word Up by Cameo

I review movies. I run a movie theatre. I annoy people. I let my dogs lick my face whenever they want. Sometimes I'm even a halfway decent human.

  1. FYI on the selection process at the end of the show and whether to skip it as a surprise next time: Some of us occasionally like to play along and watch at least one of the movies that you’ll be discussing. Makes it a little hard when we don’t know what you’ve selected.
