High and Low (Brow) – Series 5 Ep 6 – Stand Up and Be Counted

Posted on Oct 27, 2014 by | 6 comments

And we’re back! So, after taking our usual month long hiatus, the podcast you hate to love, High and Low (Brow), has returned!

This episode’s theme, Stand Up and Be Counted, is partly to honor the untimely deaths of Robin Williams and Joan Rivers, and also a way of shamelessly including my love of stand up comedy in an episode. To fulfill this objective we watched two films that focus on stand up comedians. The first is the 2012 film Sleepwalk With Me, a movie written, directed and starring stand up comedian Mike Birbiglia. The other film is the 1995 comedy Funny Bones, starring Oliver Platt as a stand up comedian forever living in the shadow of his world famous father, played by Jerry Lewis.

While one of these is a relatively straight forward comedy, the other is a round about story of love, deception, stand up comedy and egg thieves. At least I think that’s what it was about, it wasn’t quite clear, I’m also not sure it was good. Or am I? Yeah, I don’t know what I’m talking about either, but that certainly isn’t going to stop us from talking about it.

If you have any recommendations for films we could watch for High and Low (Brow), or want to suggest a potential theme for us to use, or simply want to tell James how awesome he is, feel free to email us and tell us your ideas. If you enjoy the show make sure to subscribe through any of the feeds in the right hand column so you can catch every new episode. Also, please friend James on Facebook, Letterboxd and his second attempt at Twitter. Because it will frighten and confuse him. And while you’re there be sure to join our relatively new Facebook group devoted to Where the Long Tail Ends.

One more thing, if you enjoy the show please donate through PayPal in either a single installment or as a recurring donor. We’ve done some upgrading to our equipment in the past year, plan on doing more in the near future, and every little bit helps as we continue to try to stay ahead of the curve.

And, as always, thanks for listening!

I review movies. I run a movie theatre. I annoy people. I let my dogs lick my face whenever they want. Sometimes I'm even a halfway decent human.

  1. I’m surprised James didn’t lie and say Matt had eliminated I Walked With a Zombie just to pour salt in the wound.

    • He did, in a way. 🙂 I am not sure if he’s forgiven me yet.

      • I’m retitling the next theme Masturbate Theatre.

    • Thanks, Mahoney. I had a look at the website you linked to, and I think I nearly had the Great Britain/United Kingdom conundrum down. Hopefully the Brit Lit episode will be a success.

    • Dammit Mahoney I’m a Scientist, not a Historian.
