Spoiler Alert – Avatar

Posted on Jan 2, 2010 by | 5 comments

spoiler_alertJames and I sit down to record our final podcast of the year, this time covering the newest James Cameron phenomenon, Avatar. But not just that, we also cover our year end lists for High and Low (Brow) giving our top 5 favorites (Highs) and our 5 worst (Lows) that we watched this year. For those of you who haven’t had enough lists, James and I also give our top 5 moments for the year as well.

And as if that isn’t enough, somewhere around the one hour mark things get totally weird when we abandon any and all formats and free form for what seems like an hour, probably because it is. Is it a good idea? Not really, but at least you get to hear about how James wishes he was Mark Hamill. Hope you enjoy this oddly overlong edition. Feel free to email us with questions, comments and complaints about this episode, from the cold open to the year end format.

As always, thanks for listening!

I review movies. I run a movie theatre. I annoy people. I let my dogs lick my face whenever they want. Sometimes I'm even a halfway decent human.

  1. in what insane world is 75% a D? so whats a C, 80, B, 90, A 100? The only place that has that kind of standard is the DMV drivers test.

    just about everywhere the standard is 50-60 = D, 60-70 = C, 70 – 80 = B, 80 – 100 = A to A+
more strict places will bump that up by 10 so 60-70 = D and so on

  2. Its been awhile but it was something like this at my high school.

    92-100 – A
    84-91 – B
    76-83 C
    70-75 D
    69 and below – F

It also was one of the best school districts in the state, and WI typically has one of the best school systems in the country.

  3. based on this system, any movie RowThree likes has to have 4/5 or higher otherwise its just a C. in fact scratch that, because 4/5 is less than an 80. 4.5/5 would be a B, and only 5/5 would be an A but at the same time would be a perfect score. That’s just an insane system to apply to movie reviewing, and is just plain wrong to suggest to James as the standard system, because any quick google search would prove otherwise.

  4. I did some looking around and indeed there are some places with your grading system, you guys, New Jersey, some other places. Mostly though it ranges what I listed.

The connection that such a grading system createst better education doesn’t pan out logically. That grade system can just make the tests easier to get higher scores and fail those that cant keep up. A more lax system could likewise make harder tests and thus have a lower standard for passing. All pass/fail standards are relative.

I just think for movie reviewing, such a standard doesn’t make sense when you’re grading out of 5, and going by .5 increments. I gave Sherlock Holmes 3.5/5 because I considered it a B, by the one you listed it would be a D. Quite a different in perception if you tell someone something is a B vs. a D, when they have pretty much the same thoughts on the movie.

  5. Oh I agree, and I myself don’t use anything so strict. Even a 5/10 is something I would say I moderately liked.

Hopefully you’ll come to recognize that most of the times I say anything outlandish like that is just to needle James or catch him off guard. I know on at least one podcast he countered such an attempt by acknowledging that I was straight up lying just to annoy him. Its just part of our dynamic of bullshitting each other at any chance we can get.
