Still Watching the Skies: Episode 36 “Zardoz”

Posted on Aug 16, 2017 by | 0 comments

Cody, Robert, and Nat wrap up year three of the podcast by pondering John Boorman’s 1974 film ZARDOZ. Of which, the only thing we can be truly sure of is that ZARDOZ somehow exists.

ZARDOZ is certainly one of the unique films in science fiction history. It might be a folly. But, if so, it’s a sincere folly. It stars Sean Connery in his hairy chested, alpha male glory and he’s a sight to behold. If nothing else, it certainly embraces the female gaze as much as the male gaze.

What’s it about will perhaps forever baffle people, except in the broad strokes. The fact that it exists in a form that seems to be untouched by studio interference makes it something of a minor miracle. For good or ill. We can safely say there will never be another film quite like it.

Wrapping up year three, we let Nat catch up with TRIUMPH OF THE WILL, THE HIDDEN FORTRESS, and THE DAM BUSTERS after a power outage cut him off from participating in the STAR WARS bonus episode. We also discuss more TWIN PEAKS. We take a look back at the rest of the episodes, favorite discoveries, our assessment of the year as a whole, and unfinished business. And we end with a preview of what’s to come in year four.

There’s nothing like ZARDOZ to inspire discussion so give us a play below or Download the episode. Also, feel free to let us know what you think by commenting below or Email Us at [email protected] as we appreciate feedback.

Next month, we delve into the origins of all evil as we view QUATERMASS AND THE PIT and PRINCE OF DARKNESS. It’s sure to be a devilishly good time. We hope you’ll join us.
