Still Watching the Skies: Episode 39 “The Guyver & Guyver: Dark Hero”
This month Cody, Robert, and Nat make a return to the vhs glory days of Blockbuster video with a double feature of THE GUYVER and GUYVER: DARK HERO.
1991’s THE GUYVER is something of a hodge podge of Japanese anime, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, POWER RANGERS, and a somewhat edgy style, that seems to come from producer Brian Yuzna. Mark Hamill also makes an appearance. So, is this a fun, nostalgia visit or is it something better left to the past?
Evidently, the THE GUYVER was a big enough hit to spawn a sequel, although there were a number of changes made by the time the 1994 sequel GUYVER: DARK HERO rolled along. Perhaps the biggest change was David Hayter stepping into the lead role. And the tone was darker and a bit more serious. Did those changes work? How does it fit in with the comic book films of the era? We have a long discussion about the film.
But, wait. There’s more. Cody and Nat have seen THOR: RAGNAROK and have a lot to say about the film. We open the mailbag and Robert answers a question about Lovecraft’s relationship with Batman comics and specifically Arkham Asylum. We then play a game of Jeopardy to choose next month’s film.
There’s no alien bio-armor you need to listen to us. You can give us a play below or Download the episode. Also, feel free to let us know what you think by commenting below or Email Us at [email protected] as we appreciate feedback.
