Still Watching the Skies: Bonus Episode “Batman”

Batman

Robert, Nat, and Cody follow up our look at 1990s movies featuring pulp heroes with an episode on the film that started the trend, 1989’s BATMAN on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.

Batman

Tim Burton’s BATMAN is certainly one of the biggest and most influential blockbusters of all time. Even if you have to conclude that Tim Burton thinks Batman is insane and perhaps fascistic. After all, you don’t frame your black clad vigilante against a sign labeled Axis by accident.

Batman

And, as far as insanity goes, putting Batman up against The Joker is clearly exploring that concept. There are two primary interpretations of Batman, the last sane man in an insane world or a hero just as crazy as the villains he fights. It’s pretty obvious that Tim Burton sides with the latter interpretation. You’d have to be nuts to put on a costume and fight crime.

Batman

Needless to say, we have a lot to say. Robert and Cody square off in a big duke-a-roo over the film. Specifically, how much of this is truly Batman anyways? And where’s Nat? He’s at home, washing his tights.

Batman

But, it’s not all combative. We admire Anton Furst’s Oscar winning art direction, surely one of the most deserving wins in the history of the Oscars. Talk about the signature moments. And, delve into Batman on the big screen in general. So, let’s get nuts.

Later this month, we get our podcast to Mars with 1924’s AELITA, QUEEN OF MARS. It’s a visit to the earliest days of Soviet science fiction. I’m sure we’ll have a lot to say. We hope you’ll join us.
