Still Watching the Skies: Episode 50 “Heavy Metal & Heavy Metal 2000”
This episode, Nat, Cody, and Robert celebrate our 50th episode with a look at the movies HEAVY METAL and HEAVY METAL 2000. Based on the long running magazine, inspired by the French magazine Metal Hurlant, it’s the rare science fiction anthology. Possibly aimed at adults?
We walk through all the episodes, from incidents like “Soft Landing”, “Grimaldi”, and “B-17” to much fuller short tales like “Harry Canyon”, “Den”, “Captain Sternn”, “So Beautiful and So Dangerous”, and “Taarna”. The film draws heavily from stories from the magazine, direct adaptations and riffs off material such as “The Long Tomorrow” and the Arzach stories of Moebius. And we have a lot to say about all that HEAVY METAL has to offer. Including, a good deal of affection for SCTV veterans John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, and Harold Ramis.
There’s a lot to discuss. Including, Richard Corben’s original visit to Neverwhere and Den which you can view below.
Following that long discussion, we switch the much delayed follow up HEAVY METAL 2000 based on “The Melting Pot” by Kevin Eastman and Simon Bisley. Is it a worthy followup? We have a lot to say in answering that question.
Following those two films, we sit around and take a look back at the first 50 episodes. And, perhaps give some hints on what’s to come.
So don’t stand around with your dork hanging out, give us a listen. You can give us a play below or Download the episode. Also, feel free to let us know what you think by commenting below or Email Us at [email protected] as we appreciate feedback.
