Still Watching the Skies: Episode 57 “The Lawnmower Man”
Cody, Robert, and Nat take a trip into virtual reality with 1992’s THE LAWNMOWER MAN. A film so good, Stephen King filed two lawsuits to remove his name from the credits.
A pre-James Bond Pierce Brosnan plays a scientist obsessed with virtual reality and expansion of the abilities of the human brain. When he sets his sights on the mentally challenged Jobe Smith (Jeff Fahey) as the subject of his experiments, what could go wrong? Plenty.
Let us not say that THE LAWNMOWER MAN has nothing on its mind. It’s an update of FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON for a blossoming digital age, an exercise in cyberpunk, a platform for CGI immersion, and a revenge horror film all in one. A lack of ambition is not its problem.
Good taste, subtlety, and having something to say are more troublesome issues for THE LAWNMOWER MAN. And did TROPIC THUNDER take the piss out of the film? Regardless, we have a lot of fun talking about the film. THE LAWNMOWER MAN sure is emblematic of an era, if nothing else.
