Still Watching the Skies: Episode 69 “Time Bandits”
Cody, Robert, and Nat discuss Terry Gilliam’s TIME BANDITS, a romp through time and space, history and fantasy, and ultimate evil vs. the supreme being.
TIME BANDITS is technically Terry Gilliam’s third film as director, but it’s the film that made him a name. A solid hit in 1981, TIME BANDITS has a foot in Monty Python skits and some of the visionary films of Gilliam’s future.
TIME BANDITS is a story of seven little people, a boy and six dwarves, with a stolen map of time portals and an urge to steal anything not nailed down. With the supreme being hot on their heels. And a trap being laid by ultimate evil. It’s a story where technology is not to be trusted. And history is ripe for being sent up. Where imagination reigns supreme.
In other words, it’s a lot. TIME BANDITS isn’t short on ambition. Or stars like Sean Connery, Ian Holm, John Cleese, Michael Palin, and Shelley Duvall popping over for cameos. But is it a science fiction film? A cohesive whole? We have a lot to say, although everyone agrees that David Warner’s ultimate evil is great.
