Color Out of Space

Cody, Robert, and Nat are joined by Matt Gamble as we visit the blasted heath and the dark woods west of Arkham for Richard Stanley’s Lovecraft adaptation COLOR OUT OF SPACE.

“West of Arkham the hills rise wild, and there are valleys with deep woods that no axe has ever cut. There are dark narrow glens where the trees slope fantastically, and where thin brooklets trickle without ever having caught the glint of sunlight. On the gentler slopes there are farms, ancient and rocky, with squat, moss-coated cottages brooding eternally over old New England secrets in the lee of great ledges; but these are all vacant now, the wide chimneys crumbling and the shingled sides bulging perilously beneath low gambrel roofs.”

So begins Lovecraft’s tale THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE. First published in the September 1927 issue of AMAZING STORIES it would go on to become one of Lovecraft’s most celebrated works. It serves as inspiration for the CREEPSHOW segment “The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill” and ANNIHILATION. THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE has been directly adapted as DIE, MONSTER, DIE! and the German film DIE FARBE. Richard Stanley is taking a crack at it for the first English version with a budget, and respect for the original, with the latest version.

COLOR OUT OF SPACE features the Gardner family, led by patriarch Nicolas Cage, trying to make a go of it on the inherited family farm west of Arkham raising llamas They have their issues, but considering they’re led by Nicolas Cage, they’re relatively normal.

That’s until a meteor crashes in their backyard. And then things start to mutate around the meteor. First in vivid splashes of colorful vegetation and animal life and then later falling apart. And, the question always come, why should humans presume they’re not part of the natural order and immune?

COLOR OUT OF SPACE is Richard Stanley’s return to directing. It’s an adaptation of Lovecraft. And, it features a slightly gonzo Nicolas Cage performance. And llamas. Of course, we’re going to have things to talk about.
