Human Highway

Robert, Nat, and Cody are joined by Jim Laczkowski of the Now Playing Network for a trip down Neil Young’s HUMAN HIGHWAY. As a bonus, we discuss TENET.

Human Highway

“It takes A Worried Man To sing a worried song.
I’m worried now, But I won’t be worried long.”

Co-directed by, co-written by, financed by, featuring Neil Young in one of the lead roles, and with music by Neil Young and Devo, HUMAN HIGHWAY could certainly be considered a vanity project. If vanity projects were this intentionally silly.

HUMAN HIGHWAY is about a day in the life of Linear Valley and particularly at the diner and gas station Otto’s Corners. Lionel (Neil Young) is the mechanic who dreams of being a rock star. Fred (Russ Tamblyn) works the pumps. Cracker (Dennis Hopper) runs the kitchen. Nuclear garbagepersons (Devo) are customers. Otto Jr. (Dean Stockwell) is planning to burn it all down for the insurance money. But, it just might be everybody’s last day on Earth.

Human Highway

HUMAN HIGHWAY is a broad comedy with obvious political points. We have some disagreement about the final quality of the film and Neil Young’s attempts to channel Jerry Lewis, but nevertheless found quite a bit to discuss from how it foreshadows some of David Lynch’s future casting, the themes, and the cartoonish visuals.

Human Highway

Where we do come together is in the enjoyment of the music. HUMAN HIGHWAY is the rare science fiction musical. And Neil Young jamming with Devo, in a Wizard of Oz influenced dream sequence, is certainly something special.

Human Highway

As a bonus, we take some time to discuss Christopher Nolan’s TENET in a non-spoiler fashion.
