Still Watching the Skies: Episode 76 “Outland”
OUTLAND is Robert, Nat, and Cody’s opportunity to discuss the career and legacy of Sean Connery and discuss one of his few films clearly in the science fiction genre. If that’s not enough, we start a countdown of our 50 favorite films of all time.
Written and directed by Peter Hyams, 1981’s OUTLAND is influenced by HIGH NOON, with more than a dash of ALIEN. In it, Marshall Will O’Neil (Sean Connery) uncovers a narcotics ring at a mining colony on Io, a moon of Jupiter’s. But the head of the ring isn’t going to go away quietly, calling in a pair of hitmen to finish off the Marshall who won’t be bribed into silence.
Sean Connery, of course, stars in OUTLAND, and we have a lot to say about Connery. Sean Connery’s career in film was from the late 1950s until the early 2000s and include many truly iconic roles, James Bond in particular, and films. Connery was one of the biggest movie stars of all time and we talk about his career highlights and some of our favorite films of his.
All of Connery’s strengths, his charisma and his physicality, are on display in OUTLAND. Peter Hyams also brings a lot to the table with terrific production design and exciting action scenes. Perhaps the mystery / procedural elements could use some work, but for the most part we have kind things to say.
But wait, there’s more. As bonus content, we begin our countdown of our favorite 50 movies of all time. This month we cover our favorites from #50 to #41. Perhaps some surprises, but hopefully a bunch of films to put on your watch lists.
