Still Watching the Skies: 2024 Summer Bonus Episode “90s Dark Comic Book Movies”

Robert, Nat, and Cody take time off from our summer to bring you a special bonus episode focusing on four films reflecting Hollywood’s journey from BATMAN to THE MATRIX and current comic book movies via several independent comic books. It’s a podcast full of martial arts, tragic origins, night time settings, and tortured leads.

Our first destination, is 1990’S TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES.

Who knew when Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird decided to parody Frank Miller’s DAREDEVIL if they had dreams that they would be creating one of the largest pop culture successes of all time. And the 1990 movie would be a key

Debuting in March 1990, not even a year after Tim Burton’s BATMAN, the TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES made the leap to the big screen and into the hearts of many of kids of the era. Is it reviewable by kids of that era? Who knows, but we’re giving it an honest go.

Hong Kong was not likely to leave a growing action trend to other’s hands in the early 1990s and delivered their own spin on the genre with THE HEROIC TRIO directed by Johnny To and starring Michelle Yeoh, Anita Mui, and Maggie Chung. It’s a film that’s hard to describe, but not hard to enjoy..

It wasn’t long for Hollywood to take another crack at the comic book genre after TMNT and BATMAN, and Miramax was first up with THE CROW.

It’s hard to separate THE CROW and the fate of Brandon Lee. Nevertheless, we try. We can all agree that the soundtrack still works. Anything else? You’ll have to listen to find out.

Finally we arrive at arguably the birthplace of the current Comic Book genre with 1998’s BLADE.

BLADE is the first Marvel hit and for the most part, save for the R Rating, on the Marvel Cinematic Universe to come. Wesley Snipes transcends the source material and provides his own spin on a Marvel Character. We debate the effectiveness of Stephen Dorf and just what the heck is going on at the climax. But, like everyone else, we have nothing but praise for the character introduction at a blood rave and dig at the strengths and weaknesses of the film.

No need to plot revenge. You can give us a play below or Download the episode. Also, feel free to let us know what you think by commenting below or Email Us at skiespocast@gmail.com as we appreciate feedback.
