Cody, Robert, and Nat mark ten years of podcasting with Sylvester Stallone as one of the last real men around in Demolition Man, a rundown of this year’s Fantasia film festival, and a lookback at some of the highs of the last ten years of podcasting.
The 90s were a time of transition for the likes of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold solved the transition by hooking up with two visionary directors, James Cameron and Paul Voerhoeven for TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY and TOTAL RECALL.
Stallone never teamed up with that category of director, and his filmography of the 1990s was spotty at best. DEMOLITION MAN was one of his few legitimate hits. Playing an ultra-macho caveman was in Stallone’s wheelhouse. But also, making fun of that ultra-macho caveman persona turned out to also be in his wheelhouse.
With a script by Daniel Waters, there’s a sheen of wit and satire running throughout DEMOLITION MAN. And, everyone is in on it, including Wesley Snipes going fully over the top as the dastardly Simon Phoenix. It’s to Stallone’s credit that he’s not only in on the joke, he makes room for others to have their moments, particularly a newcomer named Sandra Bullock who would turn out to have a bright future ahead of her.
Although we all seem to think that the film is a bit slight, that doesn’t mean that we don’t have things to discuss. We certainly dig into the film for what it does and perhaps for some missed opportunities.
