MIRACLE MILE was an acclaimed screenplay that spent the better part of the 80s not getting made. But, screenwriter/director Steve De Jarnatt stuck with it and it eventually got made. Perhaps it was for the better as the delays made it possible for Anthony Edwards and Mare Winningham to be cast and they had so much chemistry it eventually led to their marriage.
MIRACLE MILE starts out as a traditional rom-com “meet cute”. Harry Washello (Edwards), a Jazz Trombonist, and Julie Peters (Winningham), a Waitress, meet at the La Brea Tar Pits and immediately fall in love. They spend the afternoon together and arrange to meet again at midnight. However, due to a freak accident, a power failure results in Harry’s alarm not waking up until much later.
You know, your standard “rom-com” hijinks. Only, Harry decides to pick up a pay phone and what he hears changes everything. He picks up a “wrong number” and hears a warning that the nukes are on their way and that the counterstrike is expected in about 70 minutes.
At first dismissed as a prank, Harry comes to believe that the call may be true. Can he find Julie and get her out of town in time? There’s a ticking clock, but also doubts. And could Harry actually be creating chaos and panic instead of accomplishing anything? Is he going to find Julie in time? Are people going to help or is this going to be a long night ala AFTER HOURS?
MIRACLE MILE is a cult film, which none of us have ever seen before, so there’s some joy of discovery in this conversation. How far would you go for love? certainly seems to be the key question. Along with what’s the value of love in the face of Armageddon? We have a lot to say about MIRACLE MILE.
