Still Watching the Skies: Episode 123 “Dead Heat”

Cody, Robert, and Nat team up again as good cop, bad cop, and good cop to find out if you can keep a good cop down in 1988’s DEAD HEAT.

The 1980s were clearly the era of the buddy cop action film. DEAD HEAT tried to do it at least one better by making a comedy/horror/action buddy film with 1988’s DEAD HEAT. One’s a live cop, one’s a zombie cop, together they fight crime.

DEAD HEAT features Treat Williams turning in a fairly earnest performance as Roger Mortis, the zombie cop of the concept. SNL alumni Joe Piscopo is his wise cracking partner. They’re joined by favorites like Darren McGavin and Vincent Price as they start unraveling a conspiracy surrounding jewelry shop robbers who won’t die when riddled with bullets and things take a turn for the weird and horrific when Roger is killed and then revived as an undead cop.

There’s definitely a mixed reaction to DEAD HEAT on the podcast, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a lot to discuss. Good and bad. Turns out there are several fans of Darren McGavin on the podcast. Some of whom who are even familiar with Carl Kolchak.

In particular, we focus on Treat Williams and Joe Piscopo. In particular, why was Piscopo the other guy that emerged from early 80s SNL? Also, does the film have anything to say about life and death?

We also have a favorite scene. Perhaps not surprisingly seemingly inspired by EVIL DEAD 2.
