Still Watching the Skies: Episode 132 “Sunshine”

Nat, Cody, and Robert take a trip to the sun and perhaps touch the face of God with Danny Boyle’s SUNSHINE.

Following up on the success of 28 DAYS LATER, with the low budget MILLIONS in between, Alex Garland and Danny Boyle reteamed for a much more ambitious science fiction film in SUNSHINE. This one involving a trip to reignite the dying Sun and save humanity. The future never looked literally brighter.

SUNSHINE would prove to be one of the biggest budgets Danny Boyle would ever have and a budget used smartly. The cast is filled with up and coming stars, and future Oscar winners including Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, Rose Byrne, Mark Strong, and others. Alex Garland’s screenplay throws no shortage of problems at the cast, but also questions about man’s place in the universe in comparison to the godlike power of the Sun.

Coupled with the cast is memorable cinematography, terrific art direction and a great score. SUNSHINE is truly a sensory experience.

The third act is controversial and we wade into the controversy. And, with much praise for the cast and production values, we ponder the questions it asks. And whether these are questions or statements.
