Robert, Nat, and Cody take time off from our summer to bring you a special bonus episode. 50 years ago, JAWS swam into theaters and changed Hollywood. With that in mind, what better time to look at the ups and downs of the film and franchise that stated the summer movie season.
Just to make sure we end on a high note, our first destination is JAWS: THE REVENGE.
There are a few things to say about the film, albeit Michael Caine probably had the final word. But it has at least one member of the original cast, for whatever that counts for. And we have one hot take on the film, albeit it doesn’t count for much either.
After that we backtrack to 1983 and JAWS 3-D.
The highest grossing of the mini-3D revival of the 80s, JAWS 3-D has almost nothing to do with the previous two entries. But it does have a Richard Matheson credited screenplay and an Oscar winner in the cast. And at least one of us shelled out for the 3D blu-ray. It made monry, but how does it stand up to time? And the SeaWorld branding does no one any favors.
From there we rewind to 1978 and JAWS 2.
Finally we arrive at a film that we have some good things to say about. There’s one classic in this franchise, and JAWS 2 isn’t it, but it kind of lays the template for sequels and the slasher genre. And it’s an effective enough thriller in its own right.
Finally we return to the wellspring of the Summer movie season, Steven Spielberg’s JAWS.
JAWS is one of the most celebrated films in American history and no one here disagrees with that opinion.
